Description | This course is designed to develop the ability of the participant to intervene in conflict and crisis situations with competence and confidence. The student will examine conflict situations from inception through intervention and resolution. A variety of problem-solving skills using non-violent de-escalation techniques will be discussed as well as incident specific intervention strategies. The student will be taught to recognize pre-violent behavior indicators and then how to determine and effect appropriate responses to these encounters. These responses will emphasize officer safety, self-awareness, and self-preparation. The student will learn to recognize stress indicators within themselves and be taught effective strategies to counteract those negative effects, including PTSD. There is a significant mental health component designed to allow the student to empathise and appreciate mental health issues. Mental health will be investigated from the perspective of people suffering from mental health issues and their related societal impacts. Students will also have an opportunity to become 'SafeTalk' certified. |
