Description | Southeast Asia is a vast and complex region that consists of 11 countries including Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. This is an introductory course in which students learn about the diversity of Southeast Asian peoples, cultures and political economy from interdisciplinary perspectives. The course explores the conflict, resistance and challenges to a national and regional unity as well as the impact of urbanization and globalization on sustainable development. Students gain knowledge of the whole region, but also get the opportunity to focus their study on culture, history, economy or politics of the single country that interests them most. In addition, Canadian trade and investment in Southeast Asian countries is expanding quickly not in volume but across many sectors. This course prepares students to enter the job market in a number of different fields and set one of the region’s cultural understandings. |
