| Description | This rights-based course aims to inform and prepare the developing Child and Youth Care (CYC) practitioner to work with children, youth, and families who identify with Indigenous, Black, and racialized communities, as well as people in the 2SLGBTQ+, and disabled communities. This course will engage in a culture of learning through reflection that focuses on meaningful discourse that will prioritize equity, diversity, and inclusion in youth work and equitable outcomes through anti-oppressive practice (AOP) in all areas of engagement. Discussions will focus on the evolving approaches CYC practitioners must take to meet young people and families where they are at (including cyberspace). Students will explore the shift in youth work settings (eg.: outreach work, private practice) and how they can add value and leadership to the teams and participants within them. This course has been designed to be fluid and align with the current trends and issues that present themselves with respect to children, youth, families, and communities. As a result, the content developed for this course will flow within the current trends facing children, youth, families, and communities where youth work practices occur. This may result in student participation in community events, guest speakers, panel discussions, cultural events, as well as advocacy and outreach opportunities in place of a structured class or lesson. |
