Course CodeMATH-231
Lecture hours per week4
Lab hours per week
Course AvailabilityOpen
Description
This course is the first of two calculus courses taken by Automation & Robotics Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technician and Mechanical Engineering Technology students in the second year of their program. A preliminary review of the concept of a function, its domain, range and graph leads to the introduction of the theory of limit of a function, and the derivative of a function as a limit (from which all rules of differentiation follow). The rules for differentiation are introduced, and then utilized to differentiate algebraic functions and some transcendental functions. The course also incorporates an introduction to the conic sections and their analysis. Throughout the course, emphasis is given to the applications of the differential calculus of algebraic and some transcendental functions to solving a variety of typical scientific and technical problems.
