Directing 1

Course CodeFLMA-702
Lecture hours per week
Lab hours per week
Course AvailabilityOpen
Description

This course gives students a comprehensive understanding of the director’s craft, process and responsibilities before, during and after production. The course will cover script and script development, character, scene analysis, casting, rehearsal, performance, design, visual style and assembling the final product.

Directors and non-directors alike will be shown how directors get what they want from actors, how they talk to cinematographers, production designers and costume designers and why most directors see editing as the final rewrite. Students will also learn how to ensure every scene they shoot fits into a film’s overall intention. Through lectures, screenings, exercises and assignments, students will be given a chance to find out firsthand what it’s like to occupy what is arguably the loneliest, most stressful and, yet, paradoxically, most rewarding position in film and television. Every student will direct at least 2 short films of 2-4 minutes in length.
