Environmental Chemistry

Description

This course is designed as an introduction to the field of environmental chemistry. In the course, students will examine the chemistry behind several of the major environmental issues facing humankind. Environmental issues examined will include global warming and the greenhouse effect, renewable and non-renewable energy sources, classical and photochemical smog, the ozone layer and ozone depletion and acid rain. In the laboratory, students will carry out labs to detect and quantify selected chemical pollutants. Students will also carry out a research project in the lab covering the production, purification and characterization of biodiesel from various feedstocks.
