Fiber Optics Communications

Description

This course is an introduction to fibre optic communications. The four main components of a fibre optic communication system: fibre, devices, transmitters and receivers; will be investigated in detail. Students will terminate a POF using ST connectors and build other specialized fibres for use in their breadboard experiments. Basic telecommunications and networking principles will also be used to investigate the physical operation and inter-operation the fiber optic system’s links and components. Power and rise-time budgets of various fibre communication systems will be analyzed. Students will be introduced to proper test and measurements techniques required to troubleshoot and confirm proper device operation and will complete a voice/data over fibre project.
