Description

This course builds on the experience gained in Field Placement 1 and is designed to offer the student the opportunity to further develop skills in working with people with intellectual disabilities at their home, school, and/or workplace. Students will demonstrate their advanced competency to practice as a Developmental Services Worker upon graduation. Students are provided an opportunity to take more of a leadership role in the placement setting, including more direct support roles (individual and/or group). Students are expected to identify relevant policy, legislation, and protocols at the placement setting and to work within these. Students are encouraged to take initiative for their learning. They might do so by observing positive role models, seeking and considering the direction and feedback of their supervisors, taking on new responsibilities under supervision, and constructively analyzing service practices.

Students are expected to engage as professionals in training, meeting more advanced practice goals and participating in the activities of the placement.

Serving people with intellectual disabilities will be the overriding purpose of all placement settings. Students are encouraged to spend time getting to know and understand the people served.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. Provide personal/health support to a person supported
  2. Use effective communication skills
  3. Plan and implement relevant teaching
  4. Identify and implement strategies to remove, or minimize barriers to community participation for the people they are supporting
  5. Establish and maintain a professional working role at all times.
  6. Use theory and feedback to reflect on their own performance and to improve their performance
  7. Create innovative, entrepreneurial and/or intrapreneurial programs or services to meet the needs of the people they support appropriate to the placement setting
