Description

This course aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the political economy of the Global South. Topics will include the origins of Bretton Woods and the post war economic settlement, underdevelopment and import substitution industrialization, globalization and the development state, and impact of the debt crisis and structural adjustment. These major topics will be augmented by select case studies including microfinance and microcredit, cell phones and information technology in the Global South, and the promise and perils of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) framework.
