Description

This is a course in the basic principles of chemical engineering as applied to the prevention, removal and treatment of various pollutants from gases, liquids and solids. Handling, management and disposal of hazardous wastes and materials will also be covered. This course is divided into 3 hours lecture and 2 hours lab per week. Students are expected to give a 45 minute oral presentation on the properties, origin, production, use, health and environmental effects, treatment, disposal of a pollutant or a family of pollutant. Each student will be assigned a different pollutant from a list. The list could include the following: heavy metal ions in water, mercury, aromatic solvents, polymeric resins, PCB, halogenated solvents, organic acids, Freon, pesticide.
