Health Promotion (60 hours)
This course will investigate the key concepts of health promotion theory and practice in both the community and the workplace setting. Students will become familiar with the history, principles and values, theory and strategies behind health promotion practice and gain a critical understanding of the social, economic, cultural, political and ethical considerations associated with the implementation of health promotion activities. An overview of the Canadian healthcare system, both past and present, will be presented, followed by an in depth discussion of how this system affect individuals, communities and society at large. The relationship between health promotion theory and practice will be explored from a best practices perspective with an emphasis on the role of evidence in implementing health promoton initiatives. An overview of key global health concerns, challenges and opportunities will be explored along with strategies for promoting health in the global context. Students will learn about a variety of resources and assessment tools related to the practice of health promotion.
