This course offers students an introduction to humanitarianism and humanitarian service delivery. Students will become familiar with the history and fundamental theories, tenets, principles, standards, policies and laws pertaining to humanitarianism. Particular focus will be given to "humanitarian intervention" and how the concepts of "Just War" and "Responsibility to Protect" (R2P) inform and influences humanitarian responses in conflict situations. Students will also have an opportunity to critically analyze and debate the roles and functions of principle humanitarian actors and the dilemmas, challenges and controversies associated with their role in the delivery of humanitarian assistance. Using the Sphere Project Minimum Standards and case studies of complex emergencies students will assess the geopolitical, economic, moral, ethical, legal, and logistical challenges, risks and dilemmas involved in humanitarian assistance and the successful delivery of humanitarian relief.
