This program is an introduction to the concepts and practical aspects of systems and networking important to the media engineering designer with natural emphasis on multimedia devices and their inter-communication

The topics covered in this course are: 

  • Computer architecture: desktops, towers, laptops, handhelds, PC-compatibles, Mac 
  • Operating systems: Windows, MacOS, Linux 
  • Interface standards: serial vs. parallel, USB, FireWire 
  • Transmission media: twisted pair cable, optical fiber cable, wireless 
  • Network concepts, OSI model, multiple access protocols 
  • Network areas: personal (PAN), local (LAN), wide (WAN) 
  • Network standards: Bluetooth, Ethernet wire/wireless 
  • Internet architecture, TCP-IP, domain-address translation, ping, hops, bandwidth/speed 
  • Cellular phone systems: architecture, switching, coverage, bandwidth/speed 
  • Network servers: multimedia servers file server, streaming video server downloading, database server, web server
