The purpose of this sixth semester course is to introduce Mechanical Engineering students to the fundamental components, concepts and techniques found in industrial instrumentation and control systems. Automatic control systems can be broken down into two primary categories: the sensors devices (or transducers) that actually measure physical variables and the circuit loops that interpret this sensor data to automatically control the operation of a given system. By identifying the basic instrumentation devices and the associated control system loops, the operation of an automated process system, as a whole, can be understood.
