| Description | This course examines key research findings and implications about the biological basis for addiction and mental health problems, including the causes, symptoms and course of addictions and mental illness, as well as drug classes and various drugs of abuse. Students will explore current and cutting edge research focused on genetic and epigenetic factors that may predispose or protect individuals in the development of addiction and/or mental illness, as well as the role of medications in supporting clients in their recovery and the prevalence and implications of co-occurring medical/physical health issues among people with addiction and/or mental health issues. Students will also learn to contextualize the neurobiological aspects of addictions within a multidimensional framework that includes biological, psychological and social/structural factors. |
