Description | The purpose of this course is to introduce internationally-educated nurses to the Canadian health care delivery system and nursing practice in Ontario. The history of nursing and its’ development as a profession will be explored. Students will begin to examine the role of the nurse and how it has been influenced by the philosophy that nursing is both an art and a science. The evolution of professional nursing organizations and their relationships to the development of the profession will be discussed. The course will examine various nursing professional associations and the role of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). There will be a strong emphasis on professional standards and related competencies, quality assurance, legislation, and regulation. Course concepts related to the professional practical nurse role will also include the therapeutic nurse client relationship, interpersonal communication, and reflective practice. Content related to legalities of individual rights and responsibilities will be introduced. These concepts will be delivered in a hybrid format which incorporates both an online and classroom component. |
