| Description | This course provides learners with a foundational introduction to pharmacology as it relates to mental health and addiction practice. Learners develop an understanding of how commonly prescribed psychiatric medications affect the brain and body, including medications used to support individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use disorders. The course also explores the effects of substances frequently encountered in community and frontline settings, including opioids, methamphetamine, alcohol, and other commonly used drugs. Emphasis is placed on helping learners understand the relevance of this knowledge in practice, including recognizing potential medication effects, understanding substance-related risks such as withdrawal and overdose, and responding safely within the scope of their role. Learners are introduced to the role of pharmacological interventions within broader systems of care and develop the ability to collaborate with healthcare professionals while maintaining clear professional boundaries and ethical practice. Ethical, trauma-informed, and non-judgmental approaches are emphasized throughout, including supporting individuals who choose not to use medication. The course highlights client autonomy, harm reduction principles, and diverse pathways to wellness and recovery. |
