Description | This course will focus on the belief that helping people who have intellectual disabilities to have competencies and learn new skills is a major part of the role of the Developmental Services Worker. Learning is enhanced by high expectations, how people are grouped, activities and processions. The course starts by examining effective teaching strategies. Specific learning strategies such as the use of role models, environmental arrangements, universal design, social stories and repetition are covered. Learning strategies that are specific to the field of Intellectual Disabilities such as graduated guidance, prompting procedures, generalization techniques, and strength-based learning are examined and practiced. Evidence based strategies are investigated to support people who have challenging behaviour. Students will write The Quality Assurance Measure’s Behaviour Support Plan. Practical in-class demonstrations will be conducted. The intersection of technology and augment communication and learning skills is explored. Course Learning Outcomes:
