| Description | In this course, students are introduced to the human service Field of Intellectual Disabilities and the delivery of both formal and informal services for people of all ages who have intellectual disabilities. The course explores the 20th Century history of Intellectual Disability in Canada and Ontario in which students examine the Eugenics era, institutionalization, deinstitutionalization and the post war Community Living Movement. Current Ontario legislation (Quality Assurance Measures from the Social Inclusion Act, 2011) and policy are examined. Students also analyze new models of individualized service delivery including Person Centered Planning and Roles Based Planning, which help people have the good things in life. Advocacy, inclusive communities, individual support plans, and empowerment are discussed as key concepts in the field. Course Learning Outcomes The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
