| Description | The course emphasizes the application of the principles of mechanics of materials by introducing students to problems that reflect realistic situations encountered in engineering practice. Mechanics of materials focuses on methods for determining internal forces (stresses) and deflections (deformations) in deformable machine components subjected to external loads. It provides methods for determining load-carrying capacity (strength) and the resulting deflections or deformations in a body. This course also introduces stress–strain relationships used to determine or justify the size and shape of machine parts subjected to external loading. |
