Description | Why do people migrate, and how does migration change both sending and receiving nations? Why do nations welcome some migration movements but not others? How do societies of migration decide “who belongs” and on what terms? Why is the world divided by national borders, and would we be better off without them? Students in this course will be introduced to core social theories and debates in migration studies, including Push-Pull theory, World Systems Theory, the Mobilities framework and Structuration, to help answer the above questions. They will analyze nation-making as a social process, and how migration both challenges and enriches conventional ideas of nationality. They will apply this knowledge to analyzing contemporary issues and crises in migration, including the global rise of forced migration, antiimmigrant populism, and hyper nationalism. |
