Nursing Practice: Simulation and Clinical Reasoning (Part 2)

Course CodeNUPD-717
Lecture hours per week
Lab hours per week6
Course AvailabilityOpen
Description

This course offers a structured, simulation-based clinical learning experience designed to support Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) in consolidating prior nursing knowledge and demonstrating competence in managing complex and unpredictable patient health conditions across acute and chronic care settings.

The course aligns with professional practice standards and entry-to-practice competencies for safe, effective and ethical nursing care. Learning experiences are delivered through in-person laboratory simulations, online instruction and virtual simulation modalities. These approaches enable learners to engage in realistic, evidence-informed clinical scenarios that support the development and evaluation of critical thinking, clinical reasoning, problem-solving and clinical judgment in accordance with regulatory expectations.

This simulation course builds on foundational nursing competencies and utilizes low- to high-fidelity simulation to assess learner performance in complex acute and chronic health scenarios. By integrating interdisciplinary knowledge and skills within a safe, controlled learning environment, the course supports learners in meeting regulatory requirements and preparing for practice across diverse health-care settings.

Students apply the Clinical Judgment Model while providing care to simulated clients and families experiencing a range of medical and surgical conditions. Course activities integrate biomedical and human science foundations and emphasize accountability, therapeutic communication, culturally responsive and patient-centred care, and effective collaboration within interprofessional health-care teams.

Throughout the 14-week course, students progressively demonstrate mastery of medical-surgical nursing competencies as they engage with current clinical technologies, evidence-based interventions and best practices. The simulation and skill development will align with and further enhance the theoretical learning studied in the current semester. Emphasis is placed on reflective practice, professional accountability, ethical decision-making and adherence to standards of practice to ensure patient safety and quality care.
