Description | Person directed planning has the ability to be used as a tool by people living with developmental (intellectual) disabilities or other marginalized individuals to construct valued, meaningful lives of their own choosing. This course will introduce students to a variety of person-centered planning strategies to empower a person to achieve their desired life, focusing on a community-first approach. It will also provide students with practical knowledge of the current support system, how it relates to person-directed planning, and where students may discover their potential role in the process. Students will learn the history of person-directed planning including how it supported a movement away from institutionalization and how it can be used today to contribute to a movement towards self-advocacy and self-determination for people with intellectual disabilities.
