Description

This course introduces students to the subject of pharmacology and the safe administration of medication. Emphasis will be on the role of the Developmental Services Worker and safe administration of medication practices. The course content will include, where drugs come from, how they are classified, therapeutic uses, and pharmacokinetics. Students will study methods of administration, and will have the opportunity to practice, and then demonstrate the preparation of oral and topical medications. Students will also learn the importance of researching medications, the relevance of possible adverse effects of medication, and evaluating drug effectiveness. In addition, students will examine the importance of protocols relating to various medications, and learn how to create a protocol for an individual’s specific needs. All skills learned within this course will strive to maintain the goals set forth in the Quality Assurance Measures Regulations Act.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. Explain in general terms how drugs create their effects in the body.
  2. Use reference materials to determine, drug action, adverse effects, and recommended health and lifestyle interventions for specific drugs.
  3. Use abbreviations for the safe administration of topical and oral medications with 100% accuracy.
  4. Demonstrate the safe preparation of oral and topical medications with 100% accuracy.
  5. Discuss legal and ethical issues related to the role of the Developmental Services Worker when supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities who use medications.
  6. Explain approaches to supporting individuals to achieve effective medication results and optimal health.
  7. Create health learning plans and protocols for individuals who take prescribed drugs, and over the counter preparations.
  8. Evaluate practices and procedures for safe storage and use of medications.
