Description | This advanced course will present the Pharmacy Technician students with a continuation of theoretical knowledge of pharmacology with focus on hospital dispensing. This will include the incorporation of anatomy and physiology to common significant medical conditions and the continued use of auxiliary labels. Discussion of Health Canada prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins, natural health products and diagnostic and monitoring devices will be linked to medical conditions. Application of the knowledge of pharmacology and therapeutics will be linked to ensure accurate dispensing practice in alignment with patient profiles for optimal safe patient outcomes and referral practices. Health Canada prescription drugs by trade and generic name and drug classification, non-prescription drugs, vitamins, natural health products, diagnostic and monitoring devices will be correlated to their respective therapeutic indications, dosage forms, adverse events, major interactions and the need for auxiliary labels. Students will be expected to continue to perfect their skills in the use of specific pharmaceutical references with emphasis on the course textbook and the Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties. Continued memory and retention will be necessary for drug name, pharmacological classification, therapeutic classification and therapeutic area review for test, exam, and assignment completion. |
