Description | This course provides an opportunity for students to examine the nurse’s role in the delivery of client care within the context of primary health care. Included in this course will be the application of the nursing process to clients experiencing alterations in their health status due to either acute or chronic conditions. The impact of illness will be explored with implications for nursing practice, including discussion about ‘the lived experience’ on client and family health . Discussion will focus on the concepts of stress and coping, inflammation, pain, immobility, dementia and other impairments that arise from disorders of the nervous system. Also presented will be the nursing role in the care of clients experiencing impaired skin integrity, diabetes mellitus, altered respiratory functioning, and fluid and/or electrolyte imbalances. As part of the nursing role, principles of documentation, medication administration, and infection control will be discussed in detail. Students will be introduced to selected community-based health care resources.
