| Description | This course provides the necessary knowledge, skill and value base that will enable the student to establish the priorities of assessment and management for those persons who are in stress or crisis due to the effects of illness or trauma. The resulting pathophysiological, or psychological manifestations are assessed to determine the degree of crisis and/or life threat. The theory portion of the course focuses on the concepts of compensatory and decompensatory physiological and psychological responses to various stressors. Emphasis is placed on employing critical thinking process in order to identify and initiate treatments specific to the patient’s presenting problem(s). The assessment and management procedures are directed towards decision-making as it applies to load and go vs. stay and treat. Ongoing assessment and management of the patient’s responses not only to the stressor but also to the treatments. |
