PSHS125 PSW Clinical Practice (174 hrs.)
Students demonstrate the application of knowledge, skills and attitudes learned from the classroom courses and labs in a practice setting. The course consists of two parts: Part 1 consists of a 6 week (126 hours) instructor supervised clinical experience. Part 2 consists of a 2- week (48 hours) “preceptorship” format clinical experience. Students must receive “Pass” in Part 1 of the course in order to proceed to Part 2 Preceptorship. Overall “Pass” grade is required within PSHS 125.
PSHS 125 Part 1: “Teacher Supervised Clinical Experience”
Students apply knowledge, skills and attitudes learned from the classroom and lab courses in a college assigned clinical practice setting overseen by a clinical instructor. Students must receive “Pass” in Part 1 of the course in order to proceed to Part 2 (Preceptorship).
PSHS 125 Part 2: “Consolidation - Preceptorship Experience” Students will be assigned to a preceptor for a 2 week, (48 hours) day or evening Consolidation/Preceptorship Experience. Students will function as team members within the student Personal Support Worker role taking on a gradually increasing, safe patient care assignments to demonstrate they meet the “Practice Evaluation Indicators/Objectives” of the PSHS 125. Students will work the same full shifts on the assigned unit as their assigned preceptor. These shifts can be days or evenings, eight or twelve-hour shifts Wednesday to Sunday. The purpose of the experience is to consolidate learning.
