| Description | This marketing course focuses on the dynamics of retailing in the Canadian environment, from both conceptual and practical perspectives. It provides students with an understanding of the various decisions and choices retailers face daily. Students will examine how retailers use creative and analytical skills to solve common problems in this fast-paced environment. They will investigate opportunities in omnichannel retailing, the impact of new technologies, and the potential of social media. Students will also have the opportunity to examine retailers’ target segmentation using Environics Analytics’ proprietary Envision software, allowing them to identify and analyze trade areas and target markets. Using Shopify, students will gain first-hand e-commerce retail experience by designing and developing an online store. They will investigate merchandise assortment selection, showcase product mixes, and manage inventories. Students will also develop procedures to recommend improved efficiency and/or effectiveness of retail operations. In addition, they will visit online stores and participate in activities that enhance their understanding of retail display choices, merchandise assortments, and atmospherics, while gaining insight into the daily operations of an e-commerce enterprise. |
