| Description | Screenwriting 1 (formerly The Essentials of Screenwriting) is a niche course expanded from foundation courses RT100 and RT105 from the first and second semesters. Screenwriting 1 is also a fundamentals course that encourages and enables students to turn their story ideas into finished scripts. The course provides students with an understanding of basic dramatic structure through in-class analysis of scripts, short films, webisodes, tv comedies, tv dramas and feature films. Students then apply the principles of dramatic structure to the creation of their own short film ideas, pitching, outlining, drafting and polishing those ideas into production-ready scripts that can be shot in the fourth and fifth semester. Students are expected to use the constructive feedback they receive to alter their screenplays accordingly. From time to time, they will be asked to give constructive feedback on others' work as well. Students will also learn proper screenplay formatting rules. A final in-class exam gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their enhanced or newfound capacity to use the language and essential elements of screenwriting to analyze film and tv scripts and shows.
