In the first part of the course, students will explore the resources available at Centennial College to support their success in a post-secondary learning environment. Students will define their personal learning styles and develop a student success plan, which will encompass self-care strategies and approaches to prevent compassion fatigue and burn-out. This course will also develop the ‘new essential skills’ of research and digital literacy, entrepreneurship/intrepreneurship and innovation required for academic and professional success. Students will explore the policies, procedures and practices of the academic program and the second year Field Placement through reading and discussing the Addiction and Mental Health Worker Student Handbook and Field Placement Manual. In the second half of the course, students will learn about the professional competencies required for Field Placement and for employment as an Addiction and Mental Health Worker, including issues related to workplace safety, de-escalation, suicide prevention and positive client engagement and collaboration.
