Description

In this course the student will be introduced to death, dying and the grief process. Cultural values/beliefs and practices will be examined. The student will explore and develop a personal level of comfort in order to support/assist the dying person and family. Students will learn various pain control techniques, symptom control and comfort measures using a holistic approach within the PSW scope of practice. Topics will include the importance of therapeutic communication with team members, families and the dying person. The dying person's/family's rights and legal considerations will also be discussed. An examination of ethical issues surrounding end of life care will also be presented. Care of the dying person and post mortem care will also be examined.
