Description | The rise in attacks against Muslim women in Canada, particularly Black Muslims, has highlighted the link between anti-Muslim racism, anti-Black racism, and whether Muslim women need saving. This course examines anti-Muslim racism and the rise of the Islamophobia industry throughout the world and Canada. Understanding the bases of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism is important with Islam being one of the major monotheistic religions in the world, with close to two billion followers. This course will walk you through the corridors of history to identify the roots of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism. You will learn about the formation of the Muslim ‘Other’ following the Crusade wars, the impact of colonialism, and in the post-9/11 world. The media’s role in encouraging a rhetoric of hate and manufacturing fear toward Islam and Muslims will also be closely examined. The course concludes with counter-narratives to Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism and resistance through comedy, music, poetry, and stories. |
