Description | This course will introduce internationally-educated nurses to primary health care and health promotion within a Canadian context of diverse communities. The meta paradigm of the discipline of nursing will be examined. Students will be introduced to the nursing process using the needs approach as a theoretical framework. Students will examine and explore the concepts of health, illness, acuity and chronicity. The impact of culture on the care of the clients, families, groups and communities will be explored. The role of the practical nurse in caring for clients and families living with an acute and chronic illness will be examined. This course will assist internationally-educated nurses to further develop critical thinking and analytical skills by developing comprehensive plans of care for clients and families. Students will examine and explore the foundations of community-based nursing in Canada. Students will perform a community assessment within their own diverse communities. This course will apply relevant theoretical concepts and build upon previously acquired knowledge and competencies of the internationally-educated nurse in the care of the client, families, and communities. |
