Description

This course presents a critical examination of the social factors and determinants that influence health in a culturally diverse world. It provides students with the opportunity to analyze the social, political, economic, and cultural conditions, forces, and factors that shape the distribution of health among entire groups and populations. Students will explore the fundamental determinants of health (income/social class, gender/sexism, ethnicity/racism, etc.), will focus on specific determinants (income distribution, education, food security, etc.), and will examine whether and how these determinants can be influenced by public policies. Through reflective practice, critical thinking, research and analysis, students will acquire a strong foundation for understanding the determinants of health in both the Canadian and global contexts.
