Course AvailabilityOpen
Description

A major component of this course is the study of the process of societal devaluation and a social science theory, Social Role Valorization (SRV), which advocates valued roles as a strategy to help people have the good things in life. Social Role Valorization is discussed with a focus on imagery and competency enhancement, and it is presented as an important framework for the work of a DSW graduate. Students will examine and articulate the relationship between personal and societal values, and the life experiences of people with disabilities. In addition, students will explore their own and society’s values. One of the key components of this course is the development of professional and academic skills including the use of academic writing conventions.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. Articulate the 'good things in life' that DSWs strive for, on behalf of devalued people
  2. Explain the process and analyze the impact of social devaluation on the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.
  3. Explore the contemporary values of Western society and the impact of these values on the devaluation of people with intellectual disabilities.
  4. Explain the importance of participating in an ongoing process of critical self-reflection of how one’s personal and social location may influence and maintain power imbalances that lead to devaluation and wounding such as racism, anti-Black racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, ableism, and ageism
  5. Explain the theory of Social Role Valorization
  6. Apply the theory of Social Role Valorization and the Themes to establish, enhance, or maintain valued social roles for people.
