In November 2021, Centennial's Food Science Technology Professor Yvonne Henry, in collaboration with the Office of Industry Engagement and Graduate Employment (industry outreach area), embarked on the mission of establishing connections with various food science companies. Her aim was to provide her students with invaluable networking opportunities and insights into the offerings of the industry and what potential career pathways could look like. Yvonne, could you please share more about this initiative?
Yvonne Henry: Absolutely! Our goal was to give our students a taste of the real world, bridging academic learning with practical industry insights. By connecting with companies like Giraffe Foods, we aimed to provide immersive experiences, from facility tours, to guest speaking collaborations and networking, helping our students carve out their future in the food industry.
Centennial College: Now, let's hear from Melanie Budicky, Vice President of Research and Development, Regulatory, Quality and Food Safety at Giraffe Foods. Melanie, could you introduce yourself and share a bit about Giraffe Foods and its collaboration with Centennial College?
Melanie Budicky: I’m Melanie, overseeing Research and Development, Regulatory, Quality, and Food Safety at Giraffe Foods. We’re leaders in creating custom flavours and sauces, and we’re passionate about delivering quality and innovation. Engaging with students training in food science technology is vital to us. In 2021, we opened our Culinary Innovation Centre, a space dedicated to re-engineering and experimenting with flavours led by our experienced team of food scientists, culinary experts and our chef. Since 2021, Centennial College students have been actively engaging with us, participating in learning sessions and tours we’ve hosted at our Culinary Innovation Centre. These interactions have been designed to provide insights into our work and the industry at large and to connect students to our team members who share their career journey and passion for the food industry. We believe in inspiring students by showing them the career pathways through which their culinary aspirations can be transformed into tangible realities in the products we make.
Centennial College: It sounds like a truly enriching experience for the students. Yvonne, could you elaborate on how this partnership has benefited them?
Yvonne Henry: This collaboration has been invaluable in enriching our curriculum and motivating our students. Incorporating industry guest speakers like Melanie in our food manufacturing course this year has been amazing for students. And visiting Giraffe Foods' Culinary Innovation Centre was a pivotal moment for our students starting in 2021, and again each year after. It's one thing to learn about food science in a classroom; it's another to see it in action, where innovation meets execution. Students have been able to see the concepts they learn in class come to life at Giraffe Foods’ state-of-the-art facilities and guest speaking collaborations. It's not just about the technical skills; it’s about igniting a passion for food science, showing them the vast career paths and innovations in the industry.

Melanie Budicky: Collaborating with Centennial College has been a wonderful experience. It's enabled us to meet and mentor the next generation of food scientists, some of whom have joined our team, bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Centennial College: Turning to one of our successful partnership outcomes, we have Avleen Kaur, a 2023 Food Science Technology Centennial alum who’s now working as Product Developer at Giraffe Foods. Can you share your experience transitioning from student to industry professional?
Avleen Kaur: The educational experience I gained at Centennial College, coupled with the invaluable opportunities offered by the partnership with Giraffe Foods, has profoundly prepared me for my career in food science. Through the program, I acquired a robust theoretical foundation in food science technology, complemented by practical hands-on experience. This equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge to seamlessly transition into my role from a co-op student at Giraffe Foods to R&D Product Developer. The partnership offered early exposure to industry practices, enhancing my understanding of food product development, thus laying a solid groundwork for my professional endeavors.
Centennial College: And now to Pushpinderjeet Kaur, our second Centennial alum who graduated in 2022 from Biotechnology who’s now working as Product Developer at Giraffe Foods. Can you share your experience transitioning from student to industry professional?
Pushpinderjeet Kaur: Transitioning from being an agriculture graduate to the food industry wouldn’t have been possible without my education at Centennial College. The advanced biotechnology course provided me with the technical and analytical knowledge essential for my current job. It instilled in me the confidence to seize opportunities boldly. The facility tours offered by Centennial College offer a glimpse into the exciting happenings in the field, motivating students and offering insights into the industry. My tour at Giraffe Foods was pivotal; listening to Melanie speak about innovation, team spirit, and growth opportunities at Giraffe Foods, made me realize my career aspirations. Now, being a part of the food industry, I’m certain I made the right decision.
