With little warning winter will soon be here! While your calendar may still indicate autumn, here’s a reminder that we can be hit with sudden snowstorms this time of year. Please take extra care during the sudden wintry conditions. Slips and falls are a constant hazard, especially during the season’s freeze-and-thaw cycles.
Here are some guidelines to help you navigate winter conditions safely:
- Dress for the weather: wear a hat and gloves, and choose proper footwear, preferably with flat, rubber slip-resistant soles.
- Where possible, walk on plowed, sanded, well-lit walkways and avoid shortcuts over snow banks or on unassumed paths.
- Give yourself extra time to get where you are going and avoid rushing.
- Be careful when getting into or out of vehicles in parking lots; it may be slippery.
- Use handrails on stairs and walk with extra care.
- Be attentive; avoid distractions such as using your phone while walking.
- When entering buildings please wipe your boots or shoes on the floor mats provided.
Report slip and fall accidents to Campus Security and your supervisor/instructor, and report outdoor or building-related hazards to Facilities Services as soon as you can.
