On a Hunt for Holiday Gifts?
Shopping online during the holidays saves time, but it comes with risks.
- Phishing emails appear to be from popular retailers and shipping services – stick with trusted websites.
- Fraudulent emails may ask you to click on a link, download a file or confirm login credentials.
- Scammers lure users with free cash or other rewards – if it seems too good to be true, it’s probably a scam.
- Avoid falling for online scams – critically examine any email/message that prompts you to take action.
Avoid Fraudulent Shopping Sites
Fake shopping websites are on the rise. Scammers create these websites to steal your credit card and financial information. They use logos and branding of well-known brands to make their websites look legitimate, then send emails with malicious links to website offer extraordinarily low prices. Once you purchase something, the scammers can access your personal and financial information.
Protect yourself with these tips:
- Verify the legitimacy of any unsolicited or unexpected email before interacting with it.
- Don't automatically trust familiar logos, branding and organization names. They can easily be copied and faked. Carefully check the address in the browser, or go to the website yourself rather than trust links.
- Be particularly cautious of messages and websites displaying popular brands, especially those boasting exceptional holiday shopping deals.
Fake Charity Appeals
The holiday season is a favorite time for scammers. They come up with fake charity appeals, gift card tricks, or sneaky phishing scams using holiday themes. Here are some tips to keep you safe and enjoy the holidays:
- Be cautious of unexpected donation requests and suspicious contests.
- Verify charities through official sources before donating and keep your personal information private.
- Don't trust unexpected deals without verifying, and report anything suspicious right away.
