What are my rights?

Rights under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)

  • Request information for any general record under the custody or control of Centennial College
  • Request information for your personal information, or the personal information of another individual, under the custody or control of Centennial College
  • Request the correction of your personal information under the custody or control of Centennial College

What kind of request is it?

  • Access to general records held by the College
  • Request your own personal information
  • Correct your personal information
  • Access another individual’s personal information (with appropriate authorization or consent of the individual)

Can I submit a request?

Anyone can make a request for information:

  • Clearly describe the records you are requesting
  • Pay the $5.00 request fee
  • Clarify or narrow the request if necessary
  • Appeal the decision if you are not satisfied

How to make a request

You can make a Freedom of Information Request for any general record or personal information in a number of ways:

  • Send an email to privacy@centennialcollege.ca with the details of the request. We will follow up with you for your payment of the application fee.
  • Send a letter by regular mail to Stephen Young, Chief Privacy Officer, P.O. Box 631 Station A, Toronto, ON, M1K 5E9, with the details of your request and a cheque for $5.00 for the application fee
  • Please note that the legislated timeline of 30 calendar days for a decision on your request is contingent on the College receiving the complete request, including the $.500 application fee

What you can expect:

Once we have received your completed request, including the $5.00 application fee, the timeline for your request begins. We will provide you a decision on your request within 30 calendar days.

If your request necessitates a third-party notification, a time extension or a fee estimate, we will notify you of any adjustments to the timeline for completing your request. Timelines for completing FOI Request are established under FIPPA.

Your Right to Appeal

You may appeal to the Information and Privacy Commissioner, Ontario if you are not satisfied with the processing of your FOI Request. You may appeal if:

  • Your request was not completed within the legislated timeframe of 30 calendar days.
  • You disagree with a decision on your request, including a decision on a time extension or a fee estimate.
