David Samalea

Motor Vehicle Mechanic, Class of 1978, Teacher and Trainer of Adults, Class of 2008

David Samalea’s journey is rooted in his beginnings at Centennial. As the largest provider of apprenticeship training in Toronto, the College provided David with the foundation he needed to set his career in motion.

After completing his apprenticeship at Centennial, David spent several years working in the trade before opening his own repair facility. A decade later, he returned as an alumnus of the College – this time as an instructor – guiding apprentices in the same role he had once trained in himself.

During his more than 30 years at the College, David held a range of positions – from faculty to coordinator and most recently, as Chairperson of the Automotive and Motorcycle Department before his retirement. Over the course of his career, David remained steadfast in his commitment to putting students first – whether in the classroom, at skills competitions, or convocation. Mentoring apprentices into skilled tradespeople was David’s passion and was reflected in everything he did.

David was similarly passionate about supporting his colleagues. Known for his fairness and integrity, David fostered a strong sense of morale within his department. His thoughtful leadership inspired a shared commitment to student success.

A true people person, David excelled at building strong relationships with school board officials, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program leads, the Motor Vehicle Retailers of Ontario, and government entities. His deep knowledge of Centennial’s processes and procedures, combined with his understanding of school board operations and the apprenticeship system in Ontario, is highlighted by the numerous initiatives and programs that were launched and sustained during his time at the College.

One of the events that David particularly enjoyed being a part of was the Toronto Automotive Technology Competition. Hosted by Centennial College in partnership with the Canadian International Auto Show and the Motor Vehicle Retailers of Ontario, this annual contest brought together 20 teams of two from high schools across the Greater Toronto Area. Participants competed for top honours – and the chance to compete in the National Automotive Technology Competition in New York City. From its inception through to its 21st and final year, David was involved in every aspect of the event – from the design and planning to recruitment and the competition day itself – creating a memorable experience for students and educators alike.

Working with Community

David is a longstanding and highly respected figure within the automotive community. His commitment to promoting skilled trades and Centennial College has seen him featured across numerous media outlets, including ROB TV, CP24, CTV and TSN, where he has championed the value of skilled trades education.

David also served on the provincial Curriculum Delivery and Advisor Committee for many years, playing a key role in shaping the provincial curriculum across the many trades that he oversaw throughout his tenure at Centennial. To this day, David continues to collaborate with the College and the Ministry to develop new programs, ensuring that apprentices graduate with the appropriate credentials and meet industry standards.

Furthermore, as a passionate supporter of skilled trades competitions, David championed the Toronto Automotive Technology Competition, while also coordinating the annual Skills Competition for Centennial’s ground transportation students.

Now retired, David is an active member of his yachting community, serving on boards and committees within his yacht club during his spare time.
