Janet Montague is a registered nurse with 24 years of experience. She is a Professor and Coordinator at Centennial College, and teaches in the Toronto Metropolitan University, Centennial, and George Brown Collaborative Nursing Degree program. Janet is also a Peer Coach at the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
Janet began her career in nursing by working in various healthcare settings and her expertise spans nursing education, community health, acute and chronic care, long-term care, quality assurance, case management, and project management. Her strong passion for patient care and desire to make a difference in the lives of others led Janet to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Nursing Degree.
As a nursing professor, Janet has dedicated her career to nurturing the next generation of nurses, instilling in them the values of empathy, critical thinking, and excellence in patient care. At Centennial, Janet has served on various committees to enhance the quality of nursing education and ensure that the curriculum remains relevant to the needs of today's healthcare landscape – efforts that continue to position the College as a leader in the field.
In addition to her clinical accomplishments, Janet is a Ph.D. Candidate at Western University. Her doctoral dissertation explores Black students' experiences of belonging in nursing education through the lenses of Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality, paving the way for more equitable and inclusive learning environments.
Outside of her professional pursuits, Janet is deeply involved in volunteer activities and committees. She is President for the Registered Nurses Foundation of Ontario (RNFOO), Co-Director of Student Engagement of the Pan-Canadian Association of Nurses of African Descent (PCANAD), Co-chairs the Canadian Association Schools of Nursing (CASN) Anti-racism Committee and the Social Justice and Anti-racism Nurse Educator Interest Groups. She is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Jamaican Canadian Association of Nurses (JCAN) and an expert panel member on the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)’s best practice guideline (BPG) for Addressing Anti-Black Racism in Nursing. Moreover, Janet is a member of the Ontario Black Nurses’ Network (OBNN), the RNAO Nursing Research Interest Group, and the Black Nurses Leading Change Interest Group. Her dedication to causes that promote equity, anti-racism, and social justice further exemplifies her commitment to making a meaningful impact within the nursing profession.
In recognition of her leadership, Janet has been awarded many scholarships and awards. Most notably, she has been awarded the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Graduate Doctoral Scholarship (SSHRC). She was recently nominated by Western University as a “Rising Star of Scholarship and Research” and was invited to present her dissertation research at the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Society Creating Healthy Work Environment conference.
