Is online learning right for you?
The online version of the Interactive Media Management program is delivered asynchronously. In an asynchronous learning environment, there are no scheduled classes. Materials are delivered to you incrementally throughout the semester. You work through those materials on your own at a time that best suits your learning preference and schedule. There are also several opportunities for you to discuss and collaborate with your peers, built right into the materials.
Online learning isn’t for everyone, though! To have a successful and engaging learning experience, you need specific characteristics and skills:
- Self-Motivation: Asynchronous learning requires self-discipline and motivation. You need to be able to set your own study schedules and stay motivated to complete tasks without direct supervision.
- Time Management Skills: You need to balance your learning with other responsibilities an allocate time effectively for studying, completing assignments, and collaborating with you peers. Yes, even though this program is offered online, collaboration is still part of your learning experience!\
- Organizational Skills: You need to be organized to keep track of course materials, deadlines, and communication with instructors and peers. You’ll have 10 classes in the first semester, and organizational skills, along with time management, are definitely needed to help you stay on top of your studies.
- Effective Communication Skills: Although asynchronous learning is primarily self-paced, communication still plays a vital role. You need to communicate with faculty and peers through written messages, discussion forums, and virtual meetings.
- Persistence and Resilience: Online learning can sometimes be challenging, especially when faced with technical issues or complex course material. Faculty will schedule regular Zoom sessions for you to ask us questions and engage with your peers, but you do need persistence to work through materials on your own.
It is important to know, though, that even though you are working through materials on your own, you’re not on your own! If you need help, reach out to your faculty. We’re here to help you make the most of your online learning experience.
If you feel that online learning isn’t right for you and would prefer to be in a classroom setting, Interactive Media Management is also offered in-person, with regularly scheduled in-person classes.
