Project Information
Lara Lee Elementary School (LLE) provides a fresh, inspiring learning environment for students, faculty, and its surrounding community. LLE has been designed to met green building standards and SS- Sustainable Sites LEED Certifications. All occupancies following The Ontario Building Code (OBC) have been met including exits, washrooms, parking, plumbing, and fire-separations. LLE creates a platful and protective learning environment, in which each classroom has an exit door to access this learning environment. The courtyard of the school slopes gently towards a raised vegetated wall, which contains a vegetated swale that will provide shading within five years to the outdoor area. The infiltration trench is situated under the swale. As the children grow, they follow a symbolic path through the building that will create the passing of time. The natural source of light from the skylights, helps the vegetated wall grow, while also providing natural light in the hallways for students and staff. The structure of the building consists of hollow structural sections with steel beams supporting a hollow core system that is integrated to the Concrete Masonry Unit, which is also connected to the heating and cooling systems.

The preponderance of the issues that arises nowadays are related to our ageing parents. In this fast-paced atmosphere, they begin to sense their parent's pressure on them. Today, as a result, we have introduced a new topic called "Silver Architecture- An Inventive Animate Approach". We selected this issue to address the challenges faced by geriatric patients while also considering their needs. It is a type of architecture that provides facilities with a particular set of issues, as well as a well-designed environment that can enable the elderly feel more comfortable and explore the facility with confidence. It would also be well-lit, peaceful, approachable, and, most importantly, secure. Our group chose this topic because we have learned a lot about sustainability and it's importance for our environment and ourselves. But we wanted something more for our senior residents and those who rely on others. As the Green Architecture focuses on the sustainability and environment, Silver Architecture focuses on the people residing inside. We are not targeting a certain age group with this, but we are considering the life cycle and the fact that we will eventually require such development and technology in future.

As a continuously changing society the modern cities like Toronto are required to think about new building typologies that include not only one simple use, but also integrate potential use of land by proposing architecture designs that contribute with the smart development of cities. For instance this project include the potential redevelopment of a underused site in downtown Toronto with the intention of including public and private areas such as: pedestrian safe sidewalks, urban open areas, green terraces, sustainable design technologies, community centre, daycare, commercial units, condominium towers and subsidized suites as well as social and environmental well-being. Keeping in mind the important relation of the scale between users and building massing. The design language of the buildings do not exclude or classify population in order to offer the most similar building facades for the condominium and subsidized tower, with the use of durable materials and construction systems that keep a reasonable relation between traditional but complex and modern styles.
