Do you like to write? Maybe you pen short stories for fun, or have a novel in the works. Or maybe you’re good at essays and articles. Or maybe you’re a Centennial College student in a program with a lot of writing. After all, writing well is key to many careers, not just being a writer. Whether it’s a leisure thing, a school thing, or something you want to pursue professionally, there’s a group of like-minded writers at Centennial College, called the Writing Circle. This writing group meets regularly to share tips and tricks, learn how to get published, and, most of all, write, and share their writing, which can get published in the Writers Unblocked e-magazine. But, more importantly, they’ve just launched the first season of The Writing Circle podcast, where you can listen to interviews with the circle’s writers to learn important tips, and gain inspiration. Here’s just a few things an aspiring writer can pick up from the podcast:
Where, when and how to get the best writing done
Writing’s a process, and we all have different ways of making that process happen. In the third episode of The Writing Circle Podcast, the discussion turns to how to make your time at the keyboard efficient, as writers Shakira Ahmad, Sowmya Kishore, and Cathy Schlender all discuss how they get into the frame of mind for writing, and keep track of ideas, as well as more practical stuff, like where they go, and what time of day they do their writing.
What editing’s really like, from both sides of the page
Whether you’re editing someone else’s work, or getting your own work edited, it can feel like a nerve-wracking experience. But editing’s not about hacking writing to bits, it’s a two-way street. That’s one of the things discussed in the fourth episode of the podcast, through interviews with writer Alice Hsiung, and Editor Jeremy Lucyk. It’s a part of a larger conversation about publishing. Speaking of which…
How to get published, and how published authors get it done
That same fourth episode talks about the ins and outs of publishing, the different ways you can get published, and what a publishing journey is like. Meanwhile, episode two of the podcast speaks to a group of published authors who are a part of the Writing Circle, Philip Alalibo, Shirley Merith, and Joanne Dominico, to find out their stories of how they got published, letting you learn from the experts.
Learn more about the Writer’s Circle itself, and even join up
That brings us back to the start, the very first episode of the podcast, available to listen to now. Before we get into deeper topics, the premiere talks about the Writing Circle itself, how it got started, how it works, and what its mission is about, by talking to some of its members. Listen, learn, and if you want to take your writing to the next level, you can even join up.
