Canada’s winters can be fun, especially for kids – and kids at heart – who enjoy skating, skiing, tobogganing and snowmobiling. But it can also be cold and icy, so please take extra care in wintry conditions. Slips and falls are an ongoing hazard during the winter months.
Here are some guidelines to help you navigate winter conditions safely:
- Dress for the weather: wear a warm coat, a hat or hood, a scarf, gloves/mittens, and choose proper footwear (preferably with flat, rubber slip-resistant soles).
- Where possible, walk on shoveled/plowed, sanded, well-lit walkways; avoid taking shortcuts over snow banks and unmaintained paths.
- Give yourself extra time to get where you are going; avoid rushing.
- Be careful when getting into or out of vehicles; the parking lot may be slippery.
- Use handrails on stairs and walk with extra care.
- Be attentive and watch your step; avoid distractions such as using your phone while walking.
- When entering buildings, please wipe your boots or shoes on the floor mats provided.
