Global News has launched an incredible new scholarship program that provides renewable entrance scholarships for Black students who will pursue post-secondary studies in journalism. The initiative sees an overall investment of $140,000 to a number of prominent journalism programs at well-respected institutions across the country. We are proud to announce that Centennial College’s Journalism program is one of the programs that Global News chose to invest in!
The Global News Scholarship at Centennial College will launch in the Fall of 2021 and will be awarded to domestic students enrolled fulltime in their first semester of the Journalism Program who self-identify as members of diverse Black communities, and who demonstrate financial need. Recipients of this scholarship will also have the opportunity to receive mentoring throughout their studies from seasoned Black journalists who currently work for Global News.
“Our organization recognizes that we have a responsibility to increase the representation of Black journalists in newsrooms across the country,” said Ward Smith, Senior Vice-President, Global News. “In continuing this work, we want to encourage Black students to pursue post-secondary studies in the field and to ensure they are connected with relatable mentors that can offer support throughout their careers.”
“We need Black journalists in newsrooms to amplify and contextualize stories in the community and to paint a picture that is not driven by stereotypes,” said Dave D’Oyen, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead, Corus Entertainment. “The scholarship program aims to ensure that Black students feel empowered to pursue journalism and are eventually able to elevate issues that are of great concern to the Black community.”
At Centennial College, the news of the newly created scholarship generated excitement amongst students and staff. “We are very proud to be a recipient of the Global News scholarship for Black students in Journalism,” said Nate Horowitz, Dean of the School of Communications, Media, Arts and Design. “This support will enable Black students to continue their studies in Journalism; be recognized for excellence and most importantly, Black students will be supported through mentoring from Black journalists; resulting in stronger voices in media for diverse Black community issues in Canada.”
Thank you, Global News, for investing in our students!
