Centennial College is celebrating its partnership with the Northpine Foundation, whose historic $2.5-million investment is helping create educational and career opportunities for students in Scarborough through the Northpine Investing in Scarborough Fellowship.

On October 21, Centennial hosted the Foundation and the first cohort of Fellowship recipients for a reception at The Local Restaurant at Progress Campus. The event brought together students, College leaders and Foundation representatives to celebrate the partnership and give students an opportunity to connect with their supporters.

Northpine’s $2.5-million contribution is the largest philanthropic gift in Centennial’s history. Combined with a matching investment from the College, the gift established an endowment dedicated to supporting Scarborough students.

The Northpine Investing in Scarborough Fellowship is designed to reduce systemic barriers to education and address inequitable outcomes in the community. In addition to financial assistance, the program provides ongoing mentorship and connections to employment pathways, helping students build the skills, confidence and networks they need to succeed.

Representing the Northpine Foundation at the reception were Cathy Phillips, Founder, Funder and Director, and Neel Joshi, Impact Director – Scarborough. Both shared remarks highlighting the importance of investing in people and creating meaningful, lasting change.

Joshi, a Scarborough native, spoke about the enthusiasm he has seen from Centennial’s leadership and encouraged students to begin building their professional networks early. He also emphasized the connection the students share through both the Fellowship and their community.

Phillips reflected on the importance of establishing Northpine with a clear focus on impact and ensuring its investments make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Centennial President and CEO Dr. Craig Stephenson shared his own experience as a scholarship recipient, noting the confidence financial support gave him to pursue his goals. He encouraged the students to recognize the importance of their journeys and assured them that Centennial and Northpine would continue to follow and celebrate their progress and accomplishments.

The students also contributed their perspectives during a roundtable discussion about their experiences and ideas for Scarborough. One student proudly described the first cohort as “the pioneers,” reflecting the opportunity to help shape a Fellowship that can support future generations.

Centennial College extends its sincere gratitude to the Northpine Foundation for its historic investment and commitment to Scarborough students. Through this partnership, the College and the Foundation are working together to reduce barriers, strengthen pathways to employment and help students realize their potential.
