Description | In this course students will learn about the importance of hazard recognition, assessment and controls which form the foundational basis of any health and safety management system / program. Students will learn about conducting risk assessments and the hierarchy of controls to mitigate the harm caused by workplace hazards. They will learn the basics of the International Organization for Standardization ISO 45001, the Canadian Standards Association CSA Z45001 -19 and CSA Z1000-14 requirements for adopting an Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) to develop safe and healthy workplaces. Students will also learn how to conduct job hazard, task and safety hazard analysis. Additionally, students will examine physical, chemical, biological hazards, laboratory safety, process safety, the hazards from confined space entry, and working alone and remotely. They will apply relevant controls to reduce the risks associated with these hazards. Finally, students will identify and assess the risks associated with psychosocial hazards, workplace violence, risks involving material handling, shop machinery, from the use of hand and portable tools, and risks related to hot work, and apply appropriate controls to reduce risk to workers. |
