Description | This course examines the historical and contemporary dimensions of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism, both globally and within the Canadian context. The course traces the historical roots of anti-Muslim racism and the formation of the Muslim 'Other' by examining historical events like the Crusade wars and the colonial era to present-day manifestations of Orientalism. An important focus will be the media's role in creating a rhetoric of hate and manufacturing fear towards Islam and its nearly two billion followers. The students will also learn how Muslims, particularly Muslim women, are represented in the media and address the question of whether Muslim women need saving. The course concludes with an examination of complex narratives and forms of resistance to Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism through comedy, music, poetry, and stories. |
